If you have been busy entertaining family and friends over Christmas and New Year, January can be a truly magical time to visit Fife and recharge your batteries. With our colourful fishing villages, wonderful beaches and coastline, there is plenty of opportunity to get outdoors and blow away the cobwebs or head indoors to enjoy some of the region’s attractions during a much quieter month.
18th January – At the McManus Art Gallery –Dundee, the new display Links with the Past reveals details of the life and death of a Pictish man who was buried in a long cist at Lundin Links near Largo in Fife. The display is a result of a partnership project between The McManus and the Forensic Anthropology Research group of the Universities of Edinburgh and Dundee. The project has uncovered exciting new facts about the burial, including the man’s appearance. The project was supported by a grant from the Art Fund.
24th January – Fresh from making his solo debut on New York’s off-Broadway, Craig’s tours are firmly established as one of the best nights out around. His razor sharp wit and unsurpassed audience rapport provide the perfect blend for a brilliant night of pure, unadulterated comedy. The Byre Theatre, St Andrews is delighted to welcome him back in the pink channelling his best Bertie Bassett, turning 50 shades of gay, and proving it takes all sorts to make the world go round in his bubbly, fun new show – Bottom’s Up.

25th January – Be inspired by some of the botanically themed art in the Lines from Scotland exhibition to have a go at your own! The exhibition takes place at St Andrews Museum between 1pm and 3pm and is for adult participants aged 16 and over. Limited places are available so be sure to book in advance through The Fife Contemporary website Cost is £15 including some refreshments.
Until 26th January – If you are planning a day trip to Edinburgh during your visit to Fife, the whole family will love the Giant Lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo. This year’s theme is Lost Worlds – an all new winter prehistoric spectacle! Be transported back to a time where roar-some, weird and wonderful creatures roamed the Earth. Discover 570 million years of wildlife, from when the origins of life appeared as a dazzling array of tiny microbes, to a world where dinosaurs were born and the ice age gave way to the forgotten giants of the animal kingdom. With an extended route for 2019/2020 and over 600 brand-new lanterns, there’s more to explore.
Take time to visit wonderful St Monans
Two of the exhibitions come to a close in early February at the V&A Museum, Dundee, so January is a good month to visit if you haven’t yet explored the creative practice of menswear fashion designer Nicholas Daley, or the Hello Robot exhibition. From the robots we know and love, to the robot in your pocket, explore the fascinating future of robots at work, at home and in the blurring boundaries between human and machine.
